In September 2002, the Highland High School opened its state-of-the-art
library media center. The center boasts a print collection of
over 10,000 volumes and 36 computers with Internet access. The
High School subscribes to over 20 databases including an online
encyclopedia and almanac, magazine and newspaper article databases
for several disciplines, a photo archive and others that provide
summaries of current issues. For a complete listing of our subscriptions, click
here.
The website is divided into 6 broad categories.
- The Process suggests
starting points for research from free and subscription sites
like encyclopedias and dictionaries. In addition, The Process
includes a section on how to properly cite information found
in print and on the web.
- Find Articles is
the place to look if you need to support a paper with a magazine
or newspaper articles. Find Articles leads to databases or
websites that provide online coverage of traditional print
resources. Keep in mind that some "free" sites still
charge if you wish to view a document.
- Find Books provides
links to local library catalogs and library websites like the
Highland Public Library and SUNY New Paltz.
- Surfin' the Net provides
links to several search engines.
- Evaluation gives information
on how to think critically about the information you retreive
online and in print.
- Citation will lead
you to information about proper citation, plagiarism and the
ethical use of information.
