Juniors Juniors

To obtain junior status, students must earn at least 10 credits.

As a junior, continue to focus on strong study habits, obtaining good grades, participating in extra-curricular activities, and taking courses that are interesting to you and provide a challenge.  Continue to explore career interests and options.  Your grades continue to to be part of your permanent record.

If you are college bound, please be sure to follow the College Timeline to the left as well.

SEPTEMBER

  • Schedule changes may take place during the first two weeks of school.    If you have a problem with your schedule, make an appointment with your counselor during study hall or lunch or before or after school.
  • If you are college bound, register for the PSAT (practice test for the SAT).  Highland High School tests on the third Saturday in October.  Click here for more information about the PSAT.
  • Continue with career exploration using  Career Connections, initially introduced to students as freshmen.  College exploration may begin as well on this website.  Highand High School's Career Connections School ID is 0364616 and the School Password is H38S0751.  Students chose a username and password when they logged in for the first time and can use this id to log into Career Connections from home.  Counselors can access usernames and passwords in the event that the student has lost/forgotten theirs.  Contact the Guidance Office if you are in need of this information.

OCTOBER

  • Guidance Counselors distribute PSAT study guides to students who have registered for the PSAT.

DECEMBER

  • PSAT results are distributed to students during the school day.  Guidance Counselors interpret score reports for students and give them interpretive information to bring home to their parents.  PSAT results do not appear on the transcript.  Juniors are given information about SAT registration through the College Board website.
  • Representatives from Ulster Career & Technical Center will visit either English 11 or US History classrooms to introduce the New Visions program options offered to seniors at the center.

JANUARY-APRIL

  • Guidance Counselors begin individual meetings with juniors to:
    • review graduation requirements, transcripts, and cumulative grade point average.
    • review career plans
    • if student is planning to attend college, review internet websites that assist students in college searching. The sites most often recommended are College Board, Career Connections (see above for login information), and ECOS/Princeton Review (contact counselor for login information).
    • if student is planning to attend college, review College Binder, including 2-year timeline for applying to college.
  • College-bound students should register for the SAT and/or the ACT.  Students should take at least one exam in the junior year.
  • College Night for Juniors is usually held at Highland High School in the month of January.  Announcements will be made regarding specific date and time.

FEBRUARY-MARCH

  • Students will begin the course selection process for next year.  The Course Description Guide can be located on the Guidance Department's Main page.
  • Students review course selections with their parents.
  • Parents sign the course selection form and students return it to the Guidance Department.
  • Juniors will take a field trip to the Ulster County Career Conference at the SUNY Ulster campus.
