Sophomores

To obtain sophomore status, students must earn at least 4.5 credits. As a sophomore, continue to focus on strong study habits, obtaining good grades, participating in extra-curricular activities, and taking courses that are interesting to you and provide a challenge. Continue to explore career interests and options. Your grades continue to to be part of your permanent record. SEPTEMBER - Schedule changes may take place during the first two weeks of school. If you have a problem with your schedule, make an appointment with your counselor during study hall or lunch or before or after school.
- If you are college bound, consider registering for the PSAT (practice test for the SAT). Highland High School tests on the third Saturday in October. Click here for more information about the PSAT.
OCTOBER - Guidance Counselors distribute PSAT study guides to students who have registered for the PSAT.
DECEMBER - PSAT results are distributed to students during the school day. Guidance Counselors interpret score reports for students and give them interpretive information to bring home to their parents. PSAT results do not appear on the transcript.
JANUARY - Guidance Counselors will meet with sophomores to:
- review graduation requirements
- continue with career exploration using Career Connections, initially introduced to them as freshmen . For those who are ready, college exploration may begin as well on this website. Highand High School's Career Connections School ID is 0364616 and the School Password is H38S0751. Students chose a username and password when they logged in for the first time and can use this id to log into Career Connections from home. Counselors can access usernames and passwords in the event that the student has lost/forgotten theirs. Contact the Guidance Office if you are in need of this information.
- Representatives from Ulster Career & Technical Center will visit either English 10 or Global Studies 10 classrooms to introduce program options offered to juniors and seniors at the center.
FEBRUARY-MARCH - All sophomores will take a field trip to the Ulster Career & Technical Center.
- Students will begin the course selection process for next year. The Course Description Guide can be located on the Guidance Department's Main page.
- Students review course selections with their parents.
- Parents sign the course selection form and students return it to the Guidance Department.
APRIL-MAY - College bound students may wish to register for a June SAT Subject Test for classes you have taken this year.
- Parents will be mailed a copy of the Course Verification sheet, a listing of course selections we have on record for your student for the following year. Please contact the Guidance Office immediately if you notice any errors.
