PBIS stands for Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports. It is a nationwide program that actively encourages and rewards positive behavior in schools. At Highland Middle School (HMS), the objective of PBIS is to promote responsibility, respect, and safety schoolwide, while encouraging ALL to be life-long learners. The overall intent is that PBIS should aid in creating a supportive learning environment at HMS, and throughout the district.
Students are rewarded for following the PBIS program expectations. Students who are “caught doing the right thing” are rewarded by staff members with special tickets. Both students and staff can be recognized for exhibiting positive behaviors. Individual rewards such as gift certificates and free items from the school store and group rewards such as group breakfasts, ice pops, breakfast treats, extra recess, etc., are distributed throughout the year.
Tickets are distributed to recognize students and staff who are meeting the PBIS Expectations (please see the matrix below). Target areas are announced and reinforced throughout the year.
