Course Description:
This is an introductory class (1 credit, 40 weeks) that is equivalent to Studio Art and is a requirement for graduation and a fundamental course for those wishing to continue with advanced art classes. We will explore the visual arts in the form of fine crafts. Students will utilize the principles and elements of art and design, art history, art criticism and color theory.
Grades:
50% of your grade is project based: Each project will be introduced, demonstrated and given a rubric. Projects will receive 5 points off for each day it is late. After the 5th school day the assignment will not be accepted and the student will earn a “zero”. If you are absent, you will be expected to turn in the project on the day that you return. I am always available during Activity (9th) Period and the art studio will be available for you to use at that time.
25% of your grade is a daily grade: You are expected to arrive on time, to attend all classes, to participate to the best of your ability, to show effort, to come prepared to class with proper materials and to display a positive attitude.
25% of your grade is safety and responsibility in the art studio: You must display the safe and proper use of materials and equipment. It is your responsibility to participate in cleaning the studio work space. Each student will choose a job that they will be responsible for for the duration of the school year.
Rules and Procedures: A Rule is about behavior. A Procedure is how we do things. A Consequence is the result of not following procedure.
I promise to help you succeed. I promise that you will learn new things and do things that make you feel proud. However, for you to succeed, we must have order so that each student can learn and grow. These are our rules and procedures: RULES:
- Be Respectful: to each person in the class, to our studio, our equipment and materials.
- Be Responsible: be fully present and thoughtful and participate in your learning process. You will complete all assignments/projects before or on the deadline as outlined in the rubric.
- Be safe: the art studio contains materials and equipment that can be dangerous . Pay close attention to safety instructions and use materials and equipment as directed.
PROCEDURE:
- Nurse/Bathroom/Locker: Come to class on time and ask the teacher for a pass. Go and return quickly.
- Fire drill: Follow class to predetermined meeting area outside.Stay with the class and wait for directions.The last person out shuts the door and turns off the lights.
- Lockdown: Follow the class to the predesignated safety area. There is no talking or moving allowed during a lockdown.
- Room phone/cell phone: The only people who answer the phone are Mrs. B and the student who holds the job, “Phone operator”. You may use your cell phone, with earbuds to listen to music or do research during work time. You may NOT use your phone during announcements, presentations, instructions or demonstrations. You may NOT take photos or videos during class without permission from Mrs. B.
- Signature: Your name and period number go on the lower, right hand corner of each assignment.
- Walking around the classroom: No students are allowed in the supply closet without permission. If you need a supply that is not on the supply counter please ask Mrs. B. You will remain in your seat during presentation, instruction and demonstration. Clay must remain in the clay areas of the studio.
- Talking: You may not talk during announcements, presentations, instructions and demonstrations. Talking is allowed during work sessions. You may speak quietly to the people who sit next to you, without distracting anyone or being off task.
- Absences, Missed classes or No work days: All rubrics include seat time as a component of the grade. If you miss a class you may make up work during Activity period
