The Highland Central School District has become aware of questions circulating on social media regarding public access to the Highland High School (HHS) track and field facilities. We would like to clarify how community access to these facilities works and explain why access has been temporarily restricted this week.

The HHS track is generally available for public walking and running when it is not being used for school athletics, approved community activities, maintenance work, or other District operations. The District values providing opportunities for residents to enjoy our facilities whenever possible.

At this time, however, the track and field area has been temporarily closed as staff prepare for the HHS graduation ceremony scheduled for June 25. This closure helps ensure the safety of participants, protects equipment and event preparations, and allows crews to complete necessary setup activities.

Community members can determine whether the track is available by checking the designated access gates. When the designated entrance gate is unlocked, visitors may enter through the approved pathway and access the track for walking or running. When the gate is locked, the facility is closed as determined by the District for reasons including maintenance, scheduled use, event preparation, safety considerations, or protection of District assets.

To help preserve the facilities and ensure they remain available for community use, visitors are expected to follow all established guidelines, including:

• Enter only through designated unlocked gates.
• Do not climb or jump over fences.
• Do not move goals, equipment, or other field assets.
• Use the track for walking and running only.
• Keep bicycles off the track and field. 
• Understand that organized groups must receive District approval before using the track or field.
• Follow all posted rules and directions.

We appreciate the community’s cooperation and understanding. Our goal is to balance public access with the responsibility of maintaining safe, high-quality facilities for students, staff, and residents. We look forward to reopening the facilities for regular community use following graduation preparations and scheduled activities.
