Message from the Superintendent

Dear Members of the School Community,

I am writing to share that, at its meeting this week, the Board of Education accepted my resignation for the purpose of retirement. My retirement will be effective at the close of business on August 31, 2026.

This decision comes with a great deal of reflection and gratitude. It has truly been an honor to serve this community in a variety of roles over the years, including as a Middle School Assistant Principal, Elementary Principal, and most recently, Superintendent. Along the way, so many of you have become far more than colleagues, parents, or community members.  You have become friends, and in many ways, an extension of family. That is something I will always value and carry with me.

I am incredibly proud of the work we have done together to support our students academically, socially, and emotionally, and to continue building opportunities that prepare them for their futures. The care, commitment, and pride that define this community are what make this District such a special place.

After many years in public education, my wife and I are looking forward to the next chapter of our lives. Relocating to Central Florida has been a long-time goal for us, and we are especially excited to be closer to our daughter, who moved there last summer. While we look forward to what lies ahead, leaving a community that means so much to us will not be easy.

There is still important work ahead in the coming months, and I remain fully committed to serving the district and supporting a smooth transition. I am confident that the strong foundation we have built together will continue to guide the district’s success moving forward.

Thank you for your friendship, your support, and your unwavering dedication to our schools. It has truly been a privilege to be part of the Highland community.

With sincere appreciation,

 Joel E. Freer
