High School Marks Black History Month with Annual Concert

Highland High School’s auditorium was filled with the sounds of celebration on February 13, as students and guest artists came together for the school's annual Black History Month concert.

Talented Husky performers from the choir and band collaborated with visiting professional musicians Nikhil Yerawadekar, a multi-instrumentalist and producer, and Rhonda Denét, a soul and jazz vocalist, songwriter, and bandleader. Together, they presented a dynamic program that honored the rich musical heritage of African and African American traditions and highlighted the profound influence of Black artists on both timeless classics and contemporary music.

Selections performed during the show celebrated legendary musicians such as Billie Holiday, Ray Charles, and Nat King Cole. Through powerful vocals, instrumental performances, and meaningful storytelling, students gained a deeper appreciation for the lasting impact of these artists on American music and culture.

The energy throughout the assembly was both uplifting and inspiring, leaving students and staff with a renewed appreciation for the enduring legacy of Black musicians and their contributions to the arts.
