High School Students Bring the News to Life

Lights, camera, action! Students in Elyssa DeWitt’s first-period STEM class are taking center stage this year as the creative force behind Highland High School’s weekly video announcements. Each week, the group collaborates to produce a polished broadcast that keeps the school community informed, entertained, and connected.

From brainstorming topics and writing scripts to filming and editing, students are getting hands-on experience with every part of the production process. They’re learning how to communicate clearly, work as a team, and use digital tools to share information effectively—skills that extend far beyond the classroom.

The project not only builds technical proficiency in areas like video editing and sound design, but also fosters leadership, problem-solving, and creativity. Students rotate through different production roles, gaining a better understanding of what it takes to bring a professional-quality program to life.

Their finished videos are shared schoolwide, helping to celebrate achievements, highlight upcoming events, and build a sense of community at Highland High School. By merging technology with communication, these young broadcasters are proving that learning can be both innovative and impactful.
