High School Students Showcase Civic Engagement

Students enrolled in Christina Saylor’s Citizenship in Action class at Highland High School hosted a Civics Showcase on May 19, presenting the capstone projects they spent the school year planning, organizing, and executing in an effort to create positive change within their school and community.

The showcase also served as the students’ final evaluation, with projects reviewed by a panel of judges. Students were evaluated on a scale of “Did Not Pass,” “Pass,” “Pass with Honors,” and “Pass with Distinction.”

The projects focused on a wide range of meaningful topics, including promoting cultural awareness, encouraging movement and play, supporting mental health, and addressing environmental concerns. Through their work, students demonstrated creativity, leadership, and a strong commitment to civic engagement.

Many students in the course also met the requirements to earn the New York State Seal of Civic Readiness—a prestigious distinction recognizing students for their civic knowledge, skills, mindset, and experiences. Recipients of the seal will receive an official medal and a special designation on their diplomas at graduation on June 25.

The Civics Showcase highlighted not only the students’ hard work and dedication, but also their passion for creating meaningful change in their community and beyond.

Congratulations to these exceptional students on an outstanding achievement!
