Update on Water System Issue at Highland High School

Dear HCSD Community:

I am writing to provide an update regarding the water system issue at Highland High School.

As High School parents and staff are already aware, an underground water leak was discovered on Tuesday, January 27, and is believed to have been caused by a frozen pipe. Since that time, our Operations and Maintenance team, working alongside outside agencies and contractors, has pinpointed the location of the leak beneath the turf practice field on campus, near the bus garage.

Immediately following this discovery, water entering the High School was tested and confirmed to be safe. However, to avoid any risk of future contamination and to allow for necessary repairs, all water service to the High School was shut off on Thursday, January 29. A 5,800-gallon water tanker has been brought on site to supply potable water to the building.

At this time, Highland High School remains open and is operating as usual, with no interruption to instruction, daily operations, or after-school activities. Drinking water continues to be available throughout the building, restroom facilities remain fully operational, and food is being prepared and served safely in accordance with all health and safety guidelines.

The Transportation Department and bus garage are also operating as normal.

Repairs to the water line are expected to begin on Monday, February 2, and are anticipated to take approximately two weeks to complete. The repair plan has been designed to minimize cost and reduce potential impact to the turf practice field, with work expected to take place primarily along the perimeter of the area. Potable water will continue to be provided to the High School during this time, and there is no anticipated impact to the normal school day.

Please know that the safety and well-being of our students and staff remain our top priority. We will continue to monitor the situation closely and will provide updates should there be any changes to school operations.
Thank you for your patience, understanding, and continued partnership as we work through this issue.

Sincerely,

Joel Freer
