Highland Appoints New Transportation Director
The Highland Central School District has appointed Cathy Mekulik to serve as its new director of transportation. Mekulik, who replaces former transportation director Douglas Carter, started on June 11.
Experienced in the field of school transportation, Mekulik most recently worked as a terminal manager for Quality Bus Service. Prior to that, she was a safety manager for Acme Bus Corporation, an assistant dispatcher for the Tri-Valley Central School District, and a transportation clerk for the Ellenville Central School District.
“I wanted to get back to working in a school district,” Mekulik said about her interest in the job at Highland. “It’s much different than working for a contractor. The fact that this is a small, family-oriented community was also very appealing to me.”
Mekulik, who began her career as a bus driver in the late 1980s, is grateful to have a few months to get acquainted with her position before a new school year starts in the fall.
“I’ve already begun meeting with different people and groups throughout the District to introduce myself and listen to whatever concerns or requests they may have,” she said. “Everyone has been very friendly and welcoming.”
That includes her team of drivers and support staff—most notably, District Dispatcher Linda Calvo and Secretary Sharon Tamburri. She also has the confidence of Superintendent Thomas Bongiovi, who said, “Ms. Mekulik is off to a great start. Her extensive knowledge and experience in the field of transportation is sure to be a tremendous asset for the District.”
Right now, Mekulik is focused on looking ahead to September. “I want to make sure we have a successful start-up and a wonderful school year,” she said.
