Highland Middle Schoolers Explore Career Options at Annual Event

A student examines an artifact the presenter is holding On Thursday, November 15, more than 55 local business people and other passionate representatives of a variety of possible career choices shared descriptions of their “life’s work” with more than 400 Highland Middle School (HMS) students in Grades 6-8 during the school’s third annual Career Day event.

Representing a wide range of professions, from architects to zoologists, there were practitioners from business, military, fashion, the arts, science, education, social work, medicine, sports, firefighting, and law enforcement, all of whom volunteered their time to provide young HMS students a glimpse into the world of work.

According to HMS Assistant Principal Meghan Connors, who organized the now annual event, it took about six weeks to plan and coordinate the career fair, including contacting and inviting all the generous professionals and handling all logistics for the day. “Each year it grows and grows,” she said.

In preparation for the day, students were encouraged to examine their interests and were also schooled in some of the social skills they would need later in life in interviews and other work-related matters, such as shaking hands and making a proper introduction. On career day, tables were set up throughout the gym for each of the guest presenters, and students toured the various stations as they learned about professions that might match their fledgling ambitions.

“The HMS Career Fair is an event that offers students an opportunity to hear first-hand from community members about the career path they have chosen. This day also encourages our students to practice communication, eye contact, and having a conversation with professionals,” Ms. Connors noted. “I watched students walk up to a professional, shake their hand, introduce themselves, and intently listen to what was being said. This is what the day is about, providing these experiences to our students that generate passion, excitement, and a focus on how to get where they want to go in the future.”
