Highland Honors Senior Athletes

The hard work and dedication of 22 Highland High School Huskies were celebrated this month at a special Varsity Athletic Awards breakfast. The ceremony honored seniors who displayed dedication, participation, and sportsmanship in varsity sports.

Seven students received the Achievement Award for having earned as many as ten varsity letters. Eighteen students, one from each varsity sports team, earned the Sportsmanship Awards, which recognizes integrity, fairness, and respect. Basketball player Brianna Rozzi received the School Record Holder Award for amassing 1,920 points in her Highland career, also an MHAL record.

Athletic Director Frank Alfonso, along with his assistant Elizabeth McLoughlin and several varsity team coaches, presented plaques to the students to commemorate their achievements.

The Sportsmanship Awards honored one senior from each team who embodied fairness, respect, and integrity. Coaches made the nominations. The Achievement Award honored seniors who have earned eight or more varsity letters throughout their high school careers.

Alfonso encouraged the awardees to fully recognize and appreciate the special experiences they’ve had as student athletes. “It was a good year for Highland sports,” Alfonso said. “You represented Highland well.”

Principal William Zimmer added his congratulations. “You make us proud,” he told the awardees.

Alfonso noted his love of all sports, but said there was a special excitement ahead of each girls basketball game this past season as fans waited to see how many points Rozzi would add to her career total. Rozzi will continue her playing career in the fall with Loyola University Maryland.
