Hello Collegian Colleagues,
These past several weeks have been challenging for all, and the work you are doing with your SUNY Ulster virtual classes must be commended. I know you are receiving many thanks from students, parents and administrators; however, please indulge me in giving you one more. SUNY Ulster is grateful for your determination to continue the college coursework.
President Roberts, Vice President Stoner and I are well aware of the personal challenges many students face with this crisis. Therefore, we are adjusting some of our policies this semester in hopes to reduce some stress.
Covid19 Grading Policy for SUNY Ulster Collegian Courses
While letter grades continue to be the preferred option that best serves the students, Collegian students taking Full Year or Spring Only Collegian courses this 2019-2020 academic year may opt for a satisfactory “S” or unsatisfactory “U” grade for a maximum of two courses. Your faculty must assign a letter grade
to each student. A student who selects the S/U option must formally notify their instructor or guidance counselor within ten days of the letter grades being posted. The letter grades must be posted by June 30th. The Collegian instructor or guidance counselor will have until July 10th to submit the appropriate documentation to allow SUNY Ulster to convert the grade to an “S” or a “U.”
In accordance with the established grading system, a satisfactory grade would range from A-D.
An “S” grade will be allowed when the student successfully completes a course and requests the satisfactory/unsatisfactory option. The grade is not calculated in the student GPA on the SUNY Ulster transcript; however, course credits can be used to meet graduation requirements at SUNY Ulster. In addition, all SUNY colleges and universities will accept an “S” for those Collegian courses that have been approved for SUNY General Education.* Please note: we can not guarantee the “S” will be accepted at private higher education institutions.
A “U” grade indicates unsatisfactory performance and will be issued if the student receives a letter grade of less than “D” and requests the satisfactory/unsatisfactory option. The “U” grade is not calculated in the student grade average on the SUNY Ulster transcript and no credits are awarded.
The form to request this grading option will be sent at a later time.
The withdrawal date has been moved to May 5, 2020. If a student is in poor standing in your Collegian class, it is prudent to suggest a withdrawal. This will translate to a “W” on the transcript and no grade will be calculated in the student grade average on the SUNY Ulster transcript and no credits are awarded.
It is our hope these temporary adjustments bring some relief to you and your students as you navigate this uncharted territory. Please forward this memo to your students and to anyone else you think may need this information. As always, I am available for questions and discussion. Due dates and important points are listed below for your easy reference.

May 5th - Course withdrawal forms must be submitted
June 30th - all grades in letter form submitted in BANNER portal
June 30 - July 10 - Students may contact Collegian instructor or guidance counselor to request S/U grade.
July 10th - Request for “U” or “S” grade forms submitted
Letter grades continue to be the standard and preferred grade for SUNY Ulster Collegian classes.
Collegian faculty must submit the final grade in letter form (A - F) before a student can request a change to “S” or “U.”
All SUNY schools will accept an “S” for General Education courses.
*General Education courses include: Math, Science, English, History, Social Sciences, Art, Foreign Languages.
There is no guarantee private colleges and universities will accept an “S” for transfer.
The form to request an “S” or “U” will be sent out before June 30th.
