Preliminary End of Year Event Plans

Our moving-up and graduation ceremonies are important milestone events for members of our school community, especially our students and their families. Since the High School track and field is currently being reconstructed as part of our voter-approved Capital Project, and the Middle School is temporarily closed, we have been exploring alternate locations that ensure we can host memorable ceremonies to honor our students for their accomplishments. These traditions are important to us all, and thoughtful planning has gone into choosing venues that are both accessible to our families and meaningful to our school community.

Event details are still being finalized, but we understand how important it is for our families to have information now so they can make plans. Additional information will be shared in the coming weeks from each of the building principals, but here are the preliminary plans:

High School Graduation
The Class of 2024 Commencement will take place on the High School baseball outfield, adjacent to the southwest side of the building, on Tuesday, June 25, at 6 PM. This location offers the same picturesque backdrop of Illinois Mountain that we all are so fond of. Many alumni attended their own graduation ceremonies at this very location. Seating will be provided for all guests, and in the event of inclement weather, the ceremony will be moved indoors to the high school gymnasium.

Grade 5 & 8 Moving-Up Ceremonies
The Elementary and Middle School Moving-Up ceremonies, which have been held in the Middle School gymnasium over the last number of years, will now take place in the High School gymnasium on the following dates:

  • Grade 5 Moving-Up Ceremony: Thursday, June 20 @ 12:45 PM
  • Grade 8 Moving-Up Ceremony: Friday, June 21 @ 11:45 AM

High School classes end on June 13, and Regents exams will be administered in the C-wing from June 14-25. Since the High School students will no longer have classes, the temporary classrooms constructed in the gymnasium for Middle School students will be relocated to classrooms in the E-wing for the last week of school. This will allow us to disassemble the temporary classrooms in the gymnasium and prepare the space for the Moving-Up ceremonies.

We have confirmed with the high school that there are very few Regents exams scheduled on June 20 and 21.  We will make sure that any students taking the tests will not be impacted by the day’s events.

Our goal with these changes is to celebrate our students’ achievements with all the pomp and circumstance that they deserve. We are fortunate in the Highland Central School District to have a faculty, staff, administration, and community that will go above and beyond to achieve this. Thank you to everyone who helps make this possible.
