Gina Hansut Receives Distinguished Friend of Education Award

Ulster County Legislator Gina Hansut, a steadfast supporter of the Highland Central School District (HCSD), has received the Ulster County School Boards Association (UCSBA) Distinguished Friend of Education Award. The annual award recognizes residents from the county’s school districts and Ulster BOCES for their dedication and commitment to students and schools.

Hansut was presented with the award during the UCSBA’s annual dinner, which was held on November 21 at the Best Western in Kingston.

Hansut has worked tirelessly on behalf of the HCSD over the past several years, using her platform as a voice for schools and the students of Ulster County. She has been instrumental as a liaison to elected officials at the state level to express the need for funding to provide meals for all students at no cost to families, an initiative that was successfully implemented and now benefits all children in Highland. Additionally, Hansut has been a strong advocate for the District during recent budgetary constraints, and has encouraged lawmakers at the state level to look at the foundation formula so that small districts are seen and reflected fairly in the funding battles that occur yearly.

She is a strong supporter of students, often showing up at various school events. She also volunteers to read to Elementary School students in their classrooms, and encourages other local officials to do the same. She always puts community ahead of politics and works across the aisle to make a difference for children.

Ulster BOCES District Superintendent Dr. Jonah Schenker was full of praise Hansut and her fellow honorees.

“These individuals willingly take the time to foster trusting relationships within our local schools,” said Dr. Schenker. “They understand that their commitment to students not only supports families and communities, but also contributes to a stronger, more connected world.”
